WAN Shiming, born in 1978, Researcher, Doctoral Supervisor, Deputy director of the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS).

Prof. WAN Shiming received his bachelor degree from China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) in 2001 and Ph.D. degree of marine geology from IOCAS in 2006. Since 2006, he has been working at IOCAS. He conducted academic visits at the Department of Geology, University of Aberdeen in 2011 and the Centre de Recherches Pétrographiques et Géochimiques (CRPG-CNRS) in 2016.

His major is marine geology, especially about marine sedimentology and paleoclimatology. His research relies on the combined use of sedimentary geochemical techniques and clay minerals to trace the sediment source-sink processes in the Asian marginal seas and adjacent deep oceans during the late Cenozoic. He has extensively participated in studies of International Ocean Drilling Programs (IODP) and China Continental Shelf Drilling Projects (CSDP). He has achieved innovative insights particularly on the climatic and environmental effects of Himalayan-Tibetan Plateau uplift, mechanisms of carbon cycling during glacial periods, and processes, timing and influence of Anthropocene.

He has published over 80 SCI papers, including leading internationally journals such as PNAS, Geology, GCA, EPSL, GRL, with more than 7,000 citations. He has been funded by NSFC for Distinguished Young Scholars, Chief Scientist of NSFC Major Scientific Research Expedition, CAS Youth Innovation Promotion Association and Taishan Young Scholars.

Currently, He serves as an Editorial Board Member of Geological Magazine, Journal of Oceanology and Limnology, Acta Sedimentologica Sinica (in Chinese), and Members of the Chinese Association for Quaternary Research, Sedimentary Geology Committee of Geological Society of China.
