Big news from the front lines of climate science! The Arctic Sea Ice Prediction Model (SICNet_IOCAS), developed by the AI Oceanography Research Group from the Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS), has claimed the TOP SPOT globally in the latest seasonal forecast evaluation by the Sea Ice Prediction Network (SIPN Arctic)!
The report, which integrates numerical simulations and artificial intelligence, focuses on predicting September Arctic sea ice. In the June, July, and September 2025 forecast assessments, the SICNet_IOCAS model outperformed predictions from leading international institutions, including the UK Met Office, NOAA, NASA, the Alfred Wegener Institute (Germany), UCLA, the University of Tokyo, and Columbia University.
This isn't the first time IOCAS has shined—the institute has consistently ranked among the top three in multiple SIPN Arctic prediction challenges using SICNet_IOCAS model.
