University of Maryland Visited the Key Laboratory of Marine Ecology and Environmental Sciences

A delegation from the University of Maryland (UM) led by Professor Cheng-i Wei, Dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR), visited the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS) on 27th Sep, 2014 at the invitation of the Key Laboratory of Marine Ecology and Environmental Sciences (KLMEES). A seminar was organized between the delegation and scientists from IOCAS. Professor Song Sun, director of IOCAS, Professor Zhiming Yu, director of KLMEES and Professor Mingjiang Zhou etc. presented the seminar. 

The seminar was chaired by Professor Zhiming Yu. Professor Song Sun extended a warm welcome to the UM delegation, and introduced briefly about IOCAS. Professor Bowerman and other members of the UM delegation introduced their researches on biological indicators of environmental changes, physiological stress in fish and wildlife, water quality improvement using algae, and water quality problems in Chesapeake Bay etc. Professors Rencheng Yu, Jinxian Liu, Libin Zhang and Tifeng Shan from IOCAS introduced their studies on harmful algal blooms and ecotoxicology, molecular ecology, biological remediation and macroalgae cultivation etc. Scientists from both sides also discussed the potential collaborations in the future during the seminar.

University of Maryland, a public research university in Washing DC, is among the top 20 universities in USA. The visiting of UM delegation to IOCAS offered a good opportunity for scientists from both sides to communicate and collaborate with each other on ecology and environmental sciences in the future.
