Dr.Liu Jianguo took part in the 7th International Conference on Photosynthesis Research for Sustainability-2016. This meeting was held in Pushchino, Russia during June 19-25. The 7th International Conference on Photosynthesis Research for Sustainability-2016 provided direct interaction for attending delegates, with scientific and technical leaders in this field. Emphasis was placed on the latest unpublished technical and scientific results, along with discussion and direct interactions with strategic partners and leaders in the field. The meeting was designed to facilitate extended discussion periods, dedicated networking sessions, and exciting technical presentations. The meeting covered all areas of emerging technologies and viewpoint in primary processes of photosynthesis, structure and function of the photosynthetic apparatus, artificial and applied aspects of photosynthesis, regulation of photosynthesis, systems biology of photosynthesis, hydrogen photoproduction and emerging techniques for studying of hydrogen energy.
During the meeting, the scientists exchanged knowledge on the photosynthetic mechanisms and hydrogen photoproduction with other delegates through submitting two abstracts titled “The multiple changes of photosynthetic behaviors, the role of photorespiration during the astaxanthin accumulation in Haematococcus pluvialis grown outdoors in tubular photobioreactors” and “The key scientific and technique problems of culture microalgae for biomass, biofuel and bioproducts”. Dr. Liu gave a presentation about the multiple changes of photosynthetic behaviors during cell transformation and astaxanthin accumulation in Haematococcus pluvialis grown outdoors. In this presentation, he emphasized that the over-reduction of the PSI acceptor side and over-excitation of PSII reaction centers during astaxanthin accumulation would inevitably aggravate photoinhibition under high light, e.g. at midday. However, the level of photoinhibition in H. pluvialis decreased as the incubation time increased. This might be because the accumulated astaxanthin can protect cells against photoinhibition.
Moreover, in this international meeting, we knew about the latest progress on the mechanisms of hydrogen photoproduction. Such new information provides us with useful knowledge and method, which will be helpful in the related research in future.
