The International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP), developed from “Deep Sea Drilling Project” (DSDP), is an international marine geoscience research collaboration that explores Earth's history and dynamics using ocean-going research platforms to recover data recorded in seafloor sediments and rocks and to monitor sub-seafloor environments.
To study the origin and evolution of Izu-Bonin-Mariana (IBM) arc in the northwestern Pacific, and recover sedimentary records of climate-modulated land-sea correlations, Expedition 351 was proposed and successfully executed in the Amami Sankaku Basin in the northwestern Pacific from May 28 to July 31, 2014. In accordance with practice,all the shipboard scientists of the Expedition 351 reunion and present their post-cruise research progress after the expedition was over more than one year. In this background, Dr. Fuqing Jiang was invited to attend this post-cruise meeting held at the University of Western Australia in Perth, Australia on June 5 to 9, 2016. More than twenty scientists from eleven countries attended this meeting. During this meeting, the shipboard scientists present their data results and progresses in sedimentology, petrology, paleontolgy and paleoceanography, geochemistry and geophysics of the target area by oral or poster presentation. Dr. Jiang give a talk entitled with “Tectonic and climate control on the input of Asian dust to the Amami Sankaku Basin since Miocene”. He introduced the research progress of his group on the provenance of pelagic sediment and the identification of Asian dust in the Amami Sankaku Basin, and discussed how tectonic and climatic change modulated Asian dust to input into the Western Pacific since Miocene. The other scientists are very interested in his research and highly valued Dr. Jiang’s work. Some scientists expressed their desire for further cooperation.
The trip schedule of this meeting was well organized, and the budget was executed in strict accordance with the provisions. During this post-cruise meeting, ideas and comments from scientists of different fields are benefit for Jiang’s future research.
