Date:Nov 03, 2015    |  【 A  A  A 】

The 2nd Open Science Symposium on Western Pacific Ocean Circulation and Climate was held from October 26 to 28, 2015 in Busan, Korea under the auspices of NPOCE (Northwestern Pacific Ocean Circulation and Climate Experiment) and SPICE (Southwest Pacific Ocean Circulation and Climate Experiment), hosted by KIOST (Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology).

Over 100 participants from Australia, China, Japan, Korea, United States, Germany, etc. and regions gathered in this successful meeting, including five keynote speakers and eight invited speakers, among which there were Detlef Stammer, the co-chair of CLIVAR SSG (Climate Variability and Predictability Program, Scientific Steering Committee), and Wenju Cai, CLIVAR Pacific panel co-chair. 66 contributions out of more than 120 submissions were presented (18 as posters) in the total four sessions.

Dunxin Hu from IOCAS (Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences) as the chair of NPOCE Scientific Steering Committee, launched the scientific presentation after Jae Hak Lee’s opening remark, who is in charge of this meeting arrangement from KIOST.

Thanks to the support and encouragement from SSC members and participants, NPOCE project has shown continuous and substantial development. Both the heated discussions in the conference and the in-depth exchanges about the posters reflect that the research on “Western Pacific Ocean Circulation and climate” has attracted widespread concern. This meeting successfully serves as a platform for exchanging of latest progress and achievement on western Pacific Ocean dynamics and its climate effects, and provides a broader perspective on physical dynamics of the ENSO cycle, warm pool etc., especially for early-career scientists.

Very inspiring reports and productive discussions with international experts in multi-discipline offer the participants a wider perspective of what have been studied and what remains to be investigated, and also put a lot of value into the contribution that Chinese scientist have made, effectively pushing forward the development of IOCAS scientists acquire internationally over the target area. With the fulfillment of this meeting, it gains more international exposure to NPOCE program, seek more opportunity for international collaboration and reinforce the important role of Western Pacific Ocean circulation and climate research.
