The 50th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva took place in Palexpo, Geneva from April 9 to 13, during when over 1,000 inventions were presented by exhibitors from 35 countries and regions, and the Chinese delegation brought more than 200 exhibitors. Among all, the technology of Modified Clay controlling Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs), which was initialized by the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS), awarded Gold Medal with Jury Congratulations by the unanimously support of all jury panel members. As a great honor, only 24 inventions from China received such special award. Besides the affirmation of such promising technology, it also suggested public concern to large scale HABs globally, as well as urgent demands of applicable, efficient, and eco-friendly technologies in the field of HAB control.

HAB, known as the 'red specter,' posed a significant threat to the safety of coastal marine ecosystems worldwide. While in the field of HAB control, limited approaches were taken place in field, many of which were costly, inefficient, and prone to cause secondary pollution. Since the 90s of last century, IOCAS team took part into this field, initialized an effective and green approach based on flocculation principles, and named it the Modified Clay. By surface modifications to the natural clay particles, Modified Clays are high-efficient and dosage-saving in HAB removal, water quality improvement and aquaculture benefit, thus meet multiple requirements of stakeholders from domestic and abroad.
The International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva, founded in 1972 by the Swiss Federal Government, the Canton of Geneva, the City of Geneva, and the World Intellectual Property Organization, not only has become the world's largest event devoted exclusively to inventions, but also provides an attractive opportunity for manufacturers, distributors, and financiers, always on the lookout for new and promising products.
