Focusing on Mitigating Weather Risks to Offshore Operations

Date:May 09, 2017    |  【 A  A  A 】

MetraWeather, a specialist Australasian offshore weather forecaster, will be demonstrating new features in the MetOceanView (MOV) offshore weather portal to offshore operators at APPEA 2017.

MOV is regarded as the pre-eminent offshore weather decision-support tool. It provides offshore exploration and production operators with highly-accurate, site-specific forecasts and marine observations in real-time.

Weather has been a factor in 7 of the world’s 10 worst offshore disasters. In December 2015, 32 lives were sadly lost in the Caspian Sea after a severe weather event struck an offshore platform.

In Australia and South East Asia, tropical cyclones, tropical squalls and lightning strikes present not only marine engineering challenges for offshore operators, but rank amongst the more significant threats to health and safety offshore.

Forecasts, lightning proximity alerting, and historical metocean datasets from MetraWeather and oceanographic partner MetOcean Solutions Ltd provide vital guidance to ensure operations are conducted safely and that severe weather risks to staff, assets and the environment may be mitigated.

Project experience includes services for heavy lifts and construction, jack-up and semi-sub rig moves; metocean design criteria for pipelines, platforms and floating structures; and daily weather guidance for all offshore operations.

Delegates and exhibitors at APPEA 2017 will have an opportunity to win what is regarded as the ‘world’s best travel jacket’ courtesy of MetraWeather. The Baubax is a modern, travel-friendly bomber jacket that features a built-in inflatable pillow and eye mask; dedicated tablet, smartphone, passport and sunglass pockets; built-in gloves; a microfibre cleaning cloth and many other unique features for the global traveler.

Winning contestants will need to correctly estimate the highest wave height recorded 200 km offshore Western Australia between midnight Sunday and midnight Tuesday.

MetraWeather and MetOcean Solutions are exhibiting on Stand 150 adjacent to Shell at APPEA 2017.
