Location: Meeting Room, 1st floor, Building 8, Guzhenkou Campus, IOCAS
Introduction of Speaker:
Prof. Marco Marcelli is a distinguished marine scientist and Professor at the Department of Ecological and Biological Sciences, University of Tuscia, Italy, where he directs the Laboratory of Experimental Oceanology and Marine Ecology (LOSEM). He holds a Laurea in Geological Sciences from La Sapienza University of Rome and a Master’s in Underwater Electroacoustics from Biosonics, Seattle. His core research centers on experimental oceanography, accessible coastal observing technologies, marine ecosystem restoration, and coastal hydrodynamic modeling, with a dedicated focus on advancing affordable marine monitoring systems for global coastal oceans. A leading figure in cost-effective ocean observation, Prof. Marcelli has coordinated pivotal EU and international projects—including RENOVATE, MFSTEP, and ALPHEUS—and led work packages for over ten major research initiatives. He serves as Coordinator of the EuroGOOS Science Advisory Working Group on low-cost technologies and as CMCC’s Delegate to POGO, co-authoring the landmark EuroGOOS White Paper “Affordable Technologies for Marine Observation”. His prolific academic output encompasses over 80 peer-reviewed papers, 50+ book chapters and proceedings, and a European patent for expendable oceanographic probes. Furthermore, he has supervised 32 PhD and 93 Master’s theses, participated in 35+ oceanographic cruises, and represented Italy in high-level forums such as the G7 Ocean Summit and UN Ocean Decade initiatives, driving innovation in sustainable coastal ocean science and ecosystem conservation.
