Liu Ruiyu (J. Y. Liu), a member (academician) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), a distinguished professor at Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS) passed away at Qingdao Municipal Hospital on Jul 16, 2012, aged 90.

Professor Liu was born on November 4, 1922 in Hebei Province. He obtained his B.Sc. from the Department of Biology, Fu-Jen University (The Catholic University) in 1945 and an honorary degree of Doctor of Science from Inha University, Korea in 1995.

Liu was one of the leading scientists in marine biology and crustaceology research, and the founder of marine benthic ecology in China. He organized and participated in several major national and international research projects of oceanographic, marine biological and living resources studies, as well as the study of crustacean taxonomy and biology.
