Canada Atlantic marine science and technology delegation paid a visit to the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS) on November 1, 2012. Director Sun Song and the experts in the field of marine geology, marine ecology had an in-depth discussion with Canada visitors.
Director Sun Song introduced the key research fields, significant scientific and technological achievements, the capacity building, international cooperation and future planning of IOCAS. On behalf of Canada delegation, vice president of GeoSpectrum Technologies INC, Mr. Paul Yeatman presented the basic situation of marine science and technology industry in Canada Atlantic area, the research direction, technical advantages, as well as industrial infrastructure.
The two sides exchanged ideas around global climate change, marine systems model, marine ecosystems, earth science and deep sea research. Both sides involved unanimously expressed the hope of the establishment of a platform for academic exchanges in the field of marine environmental monitoring, marine energy conversion, marine geology and sustainable marine aquaculture research to promote marine science and technology and the cooperation. The delegation also visited Marine Biological Specimen Museum, Jellyfish Breeding Laboratory, Marine Biological Culture Collection Centre, etc.
Atlantic area, Canada (including Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island) has more than 500 companies focused on the marine industry, of which approximately 140 are advanced marine technology companies ; In this region, there are four Canada Government 's major marine science and technology research laboratories, five Universities with marine research as the main courses, more than 10% of the researchers focused on marine research; In addition, the Atlantic area has large-scale fisheries and aquaculture, the booming marine offshore oil and gas drilling industry.
