Research interests
· Taxonomy and phylogeny of non-marine Ostracoda
· Speciation in ancient lakes
· Ancient asexual reproduction
· Conservation and management of aquatic biodiversity

Present positions :
· Senior researcher at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, Freshwater Biology (Brussels, Belgium)
· Guest professor at the University of Ghent (Ghent, Belgium).

Main present functions in the international scientific community
· Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Hydrobiologia (since 2003).
· Other journal editorships: Crustaceana, Phegea, Annals of the Eastern Cape Museums
· Series editor of the series "Biology of inland waters" (Margraf  – 8 volumes).
· Coordinator of the EU Marie Curie RTN SEXASEX network (2004-2008)
· Workpackage leader of the EU project ‘Biofresh’ (2009-2013)
· Coordinator, participant of 20+ (inter-) national research projects, total budget over 5 years > 2ME

Recently organized international meetings
· An assessment of global aquatic animal diversity (Belgium, December 2008)
· Co-convener of the 16th International Symposium on Ostracoda (Brasilia, July 2009)
