Dr. Zhang is working on the structure and variability of the ocean circulation and water masses in the western Pacific based on mooring and Argo data. His work improved our understanding to the 3D structure of the ocean circulation in the western Pacific, and revealed its strong intraseasonal variability. His work also illustrated the significant contribution of the deep ocean and salinity in the Pacific sea level rise, and revealed the strengthening of the south Pacific subtropical gyre in the past 20 years. Based on above works, Dr. Zhang has published more than 20 research articles. Moreover, he organized and participated in a series of recent cruise in the western Pacific, and played a key role in the building and maintaining of the oceanic observation network of China in the western Pacific.
