Research Interests
My research focuses on the responses of algae to environmental stresses at physiological and molecular levels. It is well known that light drives photosynthesis, but also cause photodamages when the absorbed light became excessive. Photosynthetic organisms evolved multiple mechanisms to avoid or reduce photodamages, such as chloroplast movement, photorespiration, xanthophyll cycle, and non-photochemical quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence etc. Algae are large groups of photosynthetic organisms embracing chloroplasts originally derived from various ancient algae, and have light harvesting complexes of various photosynthetic pigments and proteins. Investigations on the photoprotection mechanisms in these photosynthetic organisms would help us understanding how photosynthetic organisms evolved to adapt and survive their current habitats.
