During June 28 and July 4, a group of four led by Academician Hu Dunxin visited the University of Tokyo and the JAMSTEC, and communicated with Japanese experts on deployment and observation of submersible buoy at 5000-6000 m deep-sea, one of the key problems of NNSF (the National Natural Science Foundation)-founded major project: Low-latitude Pacific western boundary circulation system and low-frequency variation of warm pool. Visitors also paid visits to Dr. Imawaki, the scientific executive, and Dr. Mizuno, the project management director of JAMSTEC. In their meeting, Academician Hu Dunxin introduced the Northwest Pacific Ocean Circulation and Climate Observing Pilot Scheme (NPOCE), and the research status quo of marine observation and research of major NNSF Project and 973 Project, etc, and Dr. Imawaki introduced the observation plans and operations of JAMSTEC in recent years, and expected that both sides can strengthen the cooperation in ocean research. Also, the two sides exchanged in detail the technical issues of design and deployment of deep-sea submersible buoy.
In the University of Tokyo, the delegation communicated with the Director of the Faculty of Science Prof. Yamagata and his research team. During the meeting, Academician Hu Dunxin, Prof. Wang Fan, Prof. Tian Jiwei, and Prof. Yamagata's team introduced separately the latest achievements. The two parties were willing to cooperate in-depth with the discussion on detail arrangements, providing a framework of substantial cooperation in the future. The delegation also visited the Marine Instruments Department, Japan Oil Giken Kogyo Co., Ltd. (NGK Company), and showed special interests in underwater winching techniques applicable in submersible buoy system.
