World famous expert, distinguished scientist in oil spill treatment, Dr. Kenneth Lee from Bedford Institute of Oceanography and Dr. Youyu Lu visited IOCAS on Jan 9, 2013. Director Sun Song of IOCAS expressed his warm welcome to Dr. Lee’s and Dr. Lu’s visit.

Dr. Lee presented a talk on “Oil Mineral Aggregate Formation and Oil Dispersion ". He is a member of several international scientific committees on oil spill treatment. Dr. Lee and his group have made big achievement on Oil Mineral Aggregate Formation and Oil Dispersion. This time, in this talk, he introduced the oil treatment technique and its validity in various environments, such as oil spills from ship tank, from oil platform, on beaches, on rocks, on sea ice etc. Moreover, he also presented their contribution in the response to Gulf of Mexico oil spill disaster in 2010, especially their technique has helped to constrain the wide spread of oil spill and thus contributed to less damage to coastal areas.

Dr. Lu presented a talk on "High-Resolution Basin-Scale Ocean Modeling and Analysis". As a leader of numerical modeling of ocean dynamics in Canada, Dr. Lu and his group have contribute a lot in numerical modeling of global climate forecasting, air-sea interactions, sea-ice interactions etc. And he has maintained close connection with IOCAS. In his talk, Dr. Lu introduces his recent achievement on high resolution numerical modeling in global ocean and new results on oceanic dynamics in marginal seas of China.

A hot discussion was followed based on their talks; the scientists in IOCAS and Dr. Lee have exchanged their views on different aspects of oil spill disaster, such as its influence on marine ecology, marine animals and also the role that oceanic dynamic processes play in the treatment of the oil spill. The scientists in IOCAS and Dr. Lu both expressed willingness for future collaboration in science. After the discussion, they visited Marine Biological Specimen Museum, Marine Biological Culture Collection Centre and Scientific Instruments in Analysis and Testing Center etc.
