With the invite of Professor Bärbel Hönisch, Dr. Zhifang Xiong in Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS) visited the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) of Columbia University from 2nd June to 2nd September.

LDEO of Columbia University is one of most famous earth-science research center on the world, which takes the leading position in Geochemistry, Marine Geology, Geology, Seismology, and so on.

Dr. Xiong learned the method how to clean the foraminiferal shells for their trace element and isotope analysis, also be trained how to operate the Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometer (TIMS) for foraminiferal boron isotope measurements in Professor Hönisch’s laboratory. Using these advanced methods, techniques and equipments, Dr. Xiong analyzed the planktic foraminiferal boron isotopes of two sediment cores from tropical West Pacific, and gained a array of high-precision data. And then, Dr. Xiong gave a presentation showing the boron isotopic data, and also discussed with the members of Professor Hönisch’s group on how to evaluation, interpret and publish these data.

In a word, by this visit, we deepened the international cooperation on the LDEO of Columbia University, especially the Professor Hönisch’s group. The new generated data can ensure the punctual accomplishment of the relevant project in our group. The learned method and technique provide a base for the establishment on the foraminiferal boron clean and measure techniques in our laboratory.
